Students who need extra support ride with a monitor

When a student needs additional support or shows behaviors that are hard to manage, a monitor is assigned: a person who rides with the student and gives them the support they need.

  • Support for the studentThe monitor handles the student's support and behavior during the ride.
  • Your role: drive safely and kindlyYour main responsibility is to get students there safely, with a kind, respectful and positive attitude. When extra support is needed, the monitor steps in.
  • You know the student before day oneFamilies fill out an "All About Me" form: likes, dislikes and comfort items, so the ride starts on the right foot.
Not every route has a monitor. It's assigned when the student needs it; your manager tells you before you accept a route.

  • Training with child psychologistsSpecial-needs training co-developed with child psychologists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, comparable to what First Student bus drivers receive.
  • Know how to calm a tough momentYou learn how behavior works and how to de-escalate, plus how to install and use special-needs equipment.
